UN says 150 women prisoners raped : More than 150 female prisoners were raped and burned to death last week when male prisoners escaping a prison in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, set the prison on fire, a UN spokesperson said.
Most of the 165 female prisoners who were raped by escaped male inmates died in the fire, human rights office spokesman Seif Magango told CNN.

Magango, citing a DRC judicial source, said that between 9 and 13 female inmates survived the fire, “all of whom were also raped.” “We have not independently verified the judicial officer’s report, but we consider his statement credible,” Magango told CNN on Thursday.
UN-sponsored Radio Okapi reported on Monday that male inmates had planned a mass escape on January 27, when the M23 rebel alliance was battling the Congolese army in Goma for control of the city. Some of them were killed by prison guards.
