Canned tuna products sold under the brand names Genova, Van Camp’s, HEB and Trader Joe’s have been recalled due to potential botulism risks. In Florida, the cans were sold at Costco, Publix, Walmart and independent retailers, according to a release issued Monday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Tri-Union Seafoods voluntarily recalled select lots of canned tuna products “out of an abundance of caution” after their supplier notified them of a manufacturing defect in the “Easy Pull” pull tab can lids that could damage the seal.
Over time, the product could leak or become contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a potentially deadly form of food poisoning. As of February 11, no illnesses have been reported. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s rare for people to get sick from eating spores of the bacteria. But in some situations, they can cause “one of the deadliest toxins known.” Which tuna products were recalled due to possible botulism contamination.
