Calvin Bassey moved to Fulham : Fulham have denounced the “appalling” racist and homophobic online harassment aimed at defender Calvin Bassey after Sunday’s FA Cup penalty shootout victory against Manchester United.
Nigeria defender Bassey, who netted the first goal at Old Trafford, recounted instances of the unpleasant harassment he experienced on social media.
“Fulham declared in a statement, ‘We firmly denounce this unacceptable conduct that has no place in football or in society.'”
“Such behaviors are completely intolerable, and we wholeheartedly back Calvin Bassey, who will keep receiving our unwavering support.”
“We will do all we can to collaborate with the appropriate authorities in uncovering the individuals responsible for these despicable messages and pursuing the harshest consequences for them.”
Bassey’s online harassment comes in the wake of recent incidents with Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure, England’s Kyle Walker, Newcastle’s Joe Willock, and Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw.
In a recent discussion with BBC Sport, Samuel Okafor, the CEO of the anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out (KIO), stated that the degree of abuse in English football had “reached crisis point.”
Bassey’s goal was negated in the second half by Bruno Fernandes, leaving the match tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra time.
Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee failed to convert for United in the shootout, allowing the Cottagers to advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage.
